About Enduraforged

BJJ Recovery and Longevity for Grapplers Over 40.

Enduraforged is a practical, evidence-informed resource for grapplers over 40 who want to recover more intelligently, train more consistently and keep Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in their lives for the long term.

I’m Michael

I’m Michael, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner from Northern Ireland. I’m in my forties, work in steel fabrication and have spent much of my life around strength training and combat sports.

My involvement in combat sports began in childhood with karate and boxing. In my twenties, I trained and competed in MMA before an injury and the demands of everyday life eventually took me away from regular training.

Even during longer breaks from combat sports, I continued strength training, conditioning and learning how different approaches affected my movement, performance and recovery.

Returning to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu After 40

When I reached my forties, I wanted to return to serious combat sports training without regular strikes to the head being part of training.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gave me the challenge, discipline, skill development and physical intensity I had missed.

It also gave me a reality check.

Training effort was only one part of the equation. Physically demanding work, family responsibilities, previous injuries, sleep, stress and total training load could all affect how well I recovered and how consistently I could get back on the mats.

I had to become more deliberate about the way I trained and recovered.

Why I Built Enduraforged

When I returned to BJJ, I found it difficult to find practical recovery information aimed specifically at grapplers over 40.

A great deal of recovery content was either overly simplistic, driven by products and trends, or written for younger athletes with very different lives and recovery demands.

Enduraforged was built to provide a more practical alternative.

The goal is not to help older grapplers train as though they are 20 again. It is to help them make better-informed decisions around recovery, mobility, strength, training load and sustainable participation in BJJ.

Experience Behind the Site

Over the years, I have balanced combat sports and strength training with physically demanding work.

I have also dealt with significant shoulder and rib injuries, recurring strains and the normal frustrations that come with trying to train consistently as you get older.

Those experiences do not make me a clinician, and personal experience alone is not scientific evidence.

They do give me first-hand understanding of the questions many older grapplers face:

  • How much training can I recover from?
  • When should I reduce intensity or volume?
  • Which recovery tools are genuinely worth considering?
  • How can strength and mobility support my BJJ?
  • When does pain or injury need professional assessment?
  • How can I make training fit around work, family and real life?

Enduraforged explores those questions without pretending there is one perfect routine for everyone.

What You’ll Find on Enduraforged

Enduraforged focuses on the areas that can support sustainable BJJ training after 40, including:

  • Recovery, sleep and fatigue management
  • Mobility and practical warm-ups
  • Strength training that supports time on the mats
  • Training load management
  • Reducing avoidable injury risk
  • Cold exposure and other recovery tools
  • Nutrition and lifestyle fundamentals
  • Honest reviews of relevant products and equipment

The emphasis is on useful information, realistic application and clear limitations—not shortcuts, exaggerated promises or fear-based advice.

How Enduraforged Content Is Created

Enduraforged combines three things:

  1. Lived experience from combat sports, strength training, injury and returning to BJJ after 40.
  2. Evidence-informed research using credible clinical guidance, peer-reviewed research and recognised professional sources where appropriate.
  3. Practical application for grapplers balancing training with work, family and everyday responsibilities.

Personal experience is presented as personal experience, not universal proof.

Where evidence is limited, mixed or uncertain, that is stated clearly. Recovery methods and products are assessed with attention to both their potential usefulness and their limitations.

Qualifications and Professional Scope

I hold an Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym).

I completed the qualification at the height of my strength training because I wanted a better understanding of anatomy, physiology, exercise principles and how the body responds to training. It was something I chose to improve my own knowledge rather than to pursue a career in the fitness industry.

I am not a personal trainer, physiotherapist, doctor, registered dietitian or other regulated healthcare professional, and I do not provide individual training programmes, medical advice or injury diagnosis.

Enduraforged combines lived experience, evidence-informed research and practical application to help grapplers over 40 make better-informed decisions about their training and recovery.

You do not need to buy every recovery product that appears on social media or follow every new trend. The aim is to understand which approaches have good evidence behind them, where equipment may genuinely add value, and where simple, consistent habits are likely to have the greatest impact.

Where medical assessment or treatment is appropriate, readers should seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
